Public Hearings & Comment Periods

The Commission welcomes and encourages public input on utility rate and siting cases and proposed rules and regulations. There are two ways for citizens to participate in the formal regulatory process. The first is to attend a public hearing. The second is to submit a comment during the open comment period. Public Hearing held on proposed merger of Westar Energy and Kansas City Power & Light
Westar Energy and Great Plains Energy, the parent of company of Kansas City Power & Light filed an application wtih the Kansas Corporation Commission to merge as equals. If approved, KCP&L and Westar will become wholly owned subsidaries of a new parent company and serve more than 1.5 million customers in Kansas and Missouri.

A public hearing was held on the request on January 22, 2018 at 6 p.m. at the Washburn Institute of Technology in Topeka. Those unable to attend may watch a recording of the hearing using the link below. Public comments will be accepted through 5.p.m. CDT on March 29, 2018.

General Investigation regarding public notice of underground injection well applications

The Kansas Corporation Commission has opened a General Investigation to create a legal record of public notice given by operators applying for an underground injection well permit beginning in October 2008. That is when the protest period timeframe was increased from 15 to 30 days. Any other issues pertaining to specific wells will not be addressed in this docket. Commission staff released its findings on February 19, 2018. The report can be viewed below by clicking on “View Docket Details” below.

The general investigation includes a public comment period that runs through April 5, 2018.
